Longing For Lilac

I'm the kind of person that gets inspired by the people around me and a lot of my motivation to write comes from my friends. Lately, my girl crush since high school has been posting a lot of lilac on her Instagram and it looked absolutely beautiful on her. Looking around in my closet, I definitely need to add more range when it comes to colours. Most of the time, my instincts draw me towards black or white. Black clothes are the closet staples which go well with everything and anything. The same can be said for white. I've been meaning to add more colour into my wardrobe and thanks to my high school girl crush, lilac was added to the list.

Luckily a few weeks ago, Wearrior Instinct was invited to the launching of Bruneian designer, Rai Ranie's ready-to-wear (RTW) casual collection launch at a new fashion boutique, Melur Official. Thanks to the woman behind @lipstickmyname, Nabeela for putting out a good word to the designer! The guests and I were spoiled with amazing company, sweets and treats! I can't thank Rai Ranie, Melur Official and Nabeela more for the wonderful experience! As if by fate, I also found something in lilac to take home with me.

The 'Lilac Flutter' by Rai Ranie that I'm wearing in the photo above is in the size UK 10-12. I normally wear a UK 8 but was too slow to grab one during the launch. Luckily this size was available thanks to Fina from Weekend Frocks, who was generous enough to hand this piece over to me! I tried it on at Melur and was happy with the fit. The Lilac Flutter is designed in Rai Ranie's signature Kaftan style. The fabric is made up of cotton, which provides good ventilation and gives the right texture to form beautiful pleats, giving rise to a flutter effect. The fabric is also thick enough that it allows good coverage and at the same time it is thin enough to be considered lightweight.

What I really admire about Rai Ranie's design for her RTW Flutters is that she placed a lot of attention to detail. The design looks minimal at glance but it far from simple. She thought of putting hidden buttons inside the sleeves right around the wrists to keep wide sleeves from firstly falling and secondly minimising exposure. My favourite detailing by Rai Ranie would be the heart embellishments at the ends of the belt. It makes the flutters even sweeter and romantic!

I mentioned earlier that Melur official had spoiled us with treats. I came home with a necklace from Bits of Random, which was exactly what I needed for my Lilac Flutter!

Since the lilac top is the hero of this outfit, I decided to pair it up with a white hijab from Tudung People and my favourite white pants from Zalora. The white brings out the colour of the top and also supports the dreamy and soft look I was going for. If you could spot it, I also decided to wear the Stella Bracelet from Enya Bijoux.

As for shoes, for the shoot I chose my nude pink heels from Dune's London. The gold lining goes well with the necklace and the nude pink fits perfectly with the softness of the lilac and whites. I would wear the whole ensemble to events, dates and even going out with a group of friends. The flutter by Rai Ranie is a great addition to my closet as a casual wear item. I couldn't find any fault with it. It is machine washable, easy to iron and quick to put on and off. Easily becoming one of my favourites. I'm excited for more RTW collections by Rai Ranie in the future! I got to have a chat with her during the launching and just like her designs, she is an inspiring woman. She will be releasing her RTW Raya collection this mid-Ramadhan, so ladies keep an eye out!

Wearrior Biographies

Hello! Welcome to Wearrior Instinct. I'm Ainul! My style is described best as 'mix and match'. Fashion, to me, is a form of self expression. I dress for myself and I love exploring new and different ways to do it. I believe strongly that we all have the potential to be the best we can be; all we have to do is to follow our (Wearrior) Instinct.

Hey! I'm Mu'izz. I'm currently taking my masters degree in Political Science at UCL. I would probably say that my fashion style is best described as "Good-boy Oxford look" and I love colours. Although, I am preppy for most of the time, I do also like to mix elements from other fashion style. Right now, I am exploring more of the urban style. For me, Fashion is a platform that expresses and embraces one's individuality. Hopefully, it will inspire you to wear your (Wearrior) instinct! – I am on a research leave at the moment, I will be back soon!

Hi! I’m Alia Alkaff, a 20-year-old Graphic Design undergraduate at Norwich University of the Arts. Black enthusiast and a lover of all things minimalistic, which also happens to best describe my style of Fashion. With being a part of Wearrior Instinct it has encouraged me greatly to be proud of what I wear and I hope we as a team will have that effect to bring out your inner Wearrior Instinct!

My name is Faiz, but most people call me Fez. I studied at the the University of Leeds and graduated in 2015. I currently run a pop-up based coffee business called Aoyama Coffee. My interests in fashion lie more in on streetwear - and bridging the gap between it and menswear. I'm a fan of the little things in labels that set them apart from others, and my taste is a little unconventional, to say the least. I'm also really into raw denim. I should mention that I'm on hiatus at the moment - but I will be back!

Oh hi there! I run a YouTube channel called AMSAIMA, where I create beauty and styling vlogs. I like to think of my fashion sense as multifaceted - I could dress to the nines with textured garments, look quirky while donning a pair of boyfriend jeans, or go for an alternative retro. Wearrior Instinct doesn’t just provide a space for me to document my looks and write about the pieces I’ve put together, but as I’m all about body positivity, I see this as an opportunity where confidence can be both built and encouraged. Lots of love, Amalsaima (or simply, Amal).
